Safety:
With Marrakech having become a fashionable holiday destination, the government has increased tourist security and we have experienced it to be a very safe place with friendly people. - also for girls alone. Obviously, like in any major city, be careful about your belongings at all times.
Getting around/map:
No problem to get around in Marrakech with Taxis - if you are staying in a big hotel. If you are staying in a riad in the medina, its a little different: little roads and narrow passages won't allow cars to drive you up to the front door, so you have to learn the way from your riad to the car access points.
Furthermore, do not expect taxi drivers to know your riad! So always carry a map and address of your riad with you!
Taxi should not cost more than 10-20 Dirham (1-2 Euro) per way within the Medina!!
Cash/prices:
best to bring Euro and change to Dirham there. In the medina and in taxis, pls note that the simplified model is used: ie 100 dirham = 10 Euro which is not a really 'good' rate. So try to pay in dirham when buying at the market. All hotels take Euro though. Prices: a tunika should not cost more than 20 Euros, max 300 dirham...even if they tell you the one you chose just happens to be sooo special and all hand embroidered etc etc
Taxi should not cost more than 10-20 Dirham (1-2 Euro) per way within the Medina!!
Temperature:
up to 30 degrees during day time! If sunny, very hot during day but cools off right after sunset. Thick pashmina or sweater needed at night! If it rains, can get very cold. Also, we do not have a plan B, so bring a small umbrella...!
Top 5 things to do:
1. sit at a cafe in Jemaa El Fna and watch the bustle. try fresh mint tea & linger until 1001 nights falls...
2. get lost in the souks. just wander as you feel like & then ask the people for the way back to 'la place'
3. visit the sights (palais royale, la koutobia, musee de marrakech etc)
4. vitit the gardens (yves st. laurents privately owned 'jardins majorelle' is def. worth to cool off...)
5. spoil yourself at a truly traditional hamman. for those who prefer privacy, buy a scrub glove and black olive oil paste in the medina and do it yourself in the private hamman of your riad.
